Tuscany Landscape Oven Hood
The oven hood design helps create the feel of a Tuscan villa.
Time: 7 days

This is my favorite mural for how it works in the space. The client saw the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun" and loved the landscapes and wall finishes. They designed their entire house structurally to feel like a Tuscan villa. The house is wide open, so you can see through to kitchen from anywhere. This mural helps set the tone for the house.

The client loved the fields of poppies and sunflowers, the villas, and the rolling countryside. She prefers bold color, so with that in mind, I painted a very ambitious and bold painting.

The sample was all poppies to the foreground, modeled from a scene straight from the movie. After seeing the sample, the client wanted sunflowers and I accommodated. The composition change from the sample required doing a second sample sketch (not shown below). She wanted tall Cyprus trees and the buildings to be more squat. I altered the colors of the sky to draw in similar tones found throughout the room and in the wood. The yellow of the Poppies mirrors the yellow of the walls.

The oven hood is atypical. The panel is flush with the cabinetry, and is very large and very conducive for a mural. There are two coats of polyurethane on the hood to protect it from splatters. I used a water-based polyurethane so that it would not yellow over time.
